How to shop for a dress shirt

When you’re in the market for a dress shirt for a formal event, where do you start? This can be a minefield, especially if you’ve never purchased one before. A quality formal shirt should have buttons right up to the top with a collar, long sleeves and wrist cuffs. How to tell the difference between a dress shirt and a casual shirt:

Dress shirts are almost always plain white or another plain colour whereas casual shirts can be striped or patterned. A dress shirt will have a rigid collar but a casual shirt will be less structured and possibly have no collar at all. A dress shirt is almost always worn with a tie of some sort and has cuffs. A casual shirt can be worn with no tie. A casual shirt will also have no tail as they are designed to be worn untucked whereas a dress shirt will be made from fine fabric and have a tail.
