Six aluminium surface treatment processes

Aluminium shows up everywhere, but on its own, it’s not always as tough or long-lasting as people need it to be.

1-Anodising – the solution you’ve probably heard of

This is the go-to option. It builds up the natural protective layer on aluminium, so it’s better at resisting corrosion. You’ll see it on everything from window frames to phone parts.

2-Electroless nickel coating

This one gets used a lot in engineering because it’s consistent. Electroless nickel coating doesn’t rely on electricity, so it can coat complicated parts pretty evenly. It’s usually chosen for extra durability or reduced wear.

3-Powder coating

This is the one that gives colour as well as protection. You’ll see it on bike frames, railings, garden furniture, and really anything that needs to look good and hold up outdoors.

4-Conversion coatings

These are thin, almost invisible layers that help stop corrosion from kicking in in the first place. Not flashy, but they do what they’re supposed to.

5-Other finishing methods

There are a few other specialist treatments depending on what the part needs, but most jobs come down to choosing between anodising, powder coating, or electroless nickel coating if strength and wear resistance are key.

6-Well-behaved aluminium

Treatment is just about getting aluminium to perform better in whatever job it’s doing. And electroless nickel coating is one of the best options.
