  1. Start an allotment and involve them with gardening. Showing your children how to look after plants, and the process of growing plants can have a great impact on how they view and take care of the natural world as they get older. The more of an interest you show in nature and wildlife, the more they will. You can be involved in little things, like watering plants, planting seeds, weeding, picking fruit and veg, and filling the bird feeder. Show them when the birds are eating and show an interest in insects when you see them, such as ladybirds. The book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar is great for teaching the metamorphism of a caterpillar to a butterfly and will help them respect caterpillars and butterflies when they see them.
