The green rolling hills, mountains and rivers of the United Kingdom are beautiful places to explore. A weekend spent wandering amid the stunning scenery of the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales, West Country moors, the fields of County Tyrone, the South Downs or the traditional farms of the South-East is a great way to unwind and explore the rural beauty spots of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Staying on a farm or a rural campsite means you can live like a local and try traditional Irish food, Welsh beer and English wine. Each county has its own specialties from oysters in Whitstable in Kent to Morecambe Bay potted shrimps. Camping is good for kids
Camping is an affordable way to take the family on holiday and research shows it is also good for them. Freedom to go reports that research by the Institute of Education at Plymouth University and the Camping and Caravanning Club found 98% of parents said camping helped their children connect with and enjoy nature.
Four out of five parents also felt camping had a positive effect on their children’s education.
These findings could also hold true for adults as they get to know the history and culture of their rural surroundings.
But don’t think because it’s rural it has to be rustic. Many farmhouses have rooms or converted barns while campsites have bungalows and chalets as well as pitches for tents. Many also have swimming pools, restaurants and entertainment.
Join the glamping revolution
Glamorous camping, known as glamping, means you can feel at one with nature but still enjoy some home comforts such as heating, TV, wifi and even hot tubs.
The Youth Hostel Association highlights new and unusual camping arrangements such as camping pods with kitchens and double beds, ensuite cabins and huts.
The YHA is encouraging everyone to join the ‘glamping revolution’ by trying different types of camping, including staying in traditional shepherds huts which add comfort to your holiday experience in the great outdoors.
