I clean therefore I am.

I simply love cleaning. Any excuse and I’m like a rat up a drainpipe except I should say it’s more like a pressure washer hose up a particularly dirty drainpipe. That’s sort of like an extreme cleaning version but it does need to get done at some point. I’m quite looking forward to it and Springtime gives me the perfect opportunity and excuse to get out there and do it. Now, where does my love of cleaning come from? I would have to say that it is my Mum and Nan. They were some of the most intense cleaners that I know. My Nan, in particular, would do battle with a big black cooker everyday that needed to be scrubbed and sealed pretty much everyday. She would vigorously attack it with coal tar and elbow grease and, when it was back to it’s best all clean and gleaming, it was as if she’d really earned it. When she sipped her tea afterwards, preparing herself for the next round of the conflict namely  Nan versus the dirt in her home, it was as if she were a General toasting a great victory. Her’s was a battle devoted to traditional methods of combat such as the Soda Crystals and woven mop.

Mum, on the other hand was more of modernist. She was not adverse to employing some technological help in the war on dirt. Whilst Nan was fully prepared to work a hard day cleaning her kitchen floor by hand, my mum much preferred to use the latest gadgets. So much so that she has a house filled full of gadgets that are gathering dust. I feel sorry for some of the gadgets that haven’t seen the light of day for years as they have been replaced by a newer, more modern version.

We can often spend so much of our time cleaning that we can miss out on the valuable time that we should be spending with our loved ones.
